If Meatless March is a social movement, is it a non-profit?
On of the first questions we get from people who hear about Meatless March is, "Are you guys a non-profit?", and the answer is kind-of; I would say we are technically a non-profit, but not legally. Allow me to explain.
First, we aren't making any money, haven't made any money, and in fact have spend a fair bit in the creation of Meatless March. In many eyes, and certainly from a cash flow basis, we are definitly not making a profit :-) So you could call us a non-profit, while others who are more cynical might just call us bad businessmen. Fortunatly the story doesn't stop here...
Legally Meatless March is not a non-profit, not yet anyway. I believe that being a non-profit is the appropriate status of Meatless March in the future. The concept and ideas behind Meatless March are really aligned more with social entrepreneurism than income. As a result, we have plans to revisit the overall strategic vision & plan over the summer and will make a decision then on the future course of the organization.
All that said, we do support worthwhile education and charitable causes. It is our intent, should we ever earn anything from this venture, that a portion of the proceeds will go to micro-loans through the Grameen Bank, Mohammed Yunis's fantastic concept for enabling the local populations with loans and support to start their own ventures. We chose this particular cause in part from the idea of Harmony that comes from Bi Nka Bi, the African Symbol that our logo is based on.
We also belive in education, with respect to diet, activity levels and fitness, but as far as deciding who, what and where to support, that is a little like counting your chickens before they hatch (Is there a vegetarian spin on that concept?) as without revenue, saying where we will give has no foundation.
