How the idea started...
The Meatless Month idea grew out of a dinner discussion among friends. In between sparring about politics, religion, and who was going to pay the bill, the topic rolled around to health and energy levels. Somebody mentioned that going veggie was supposed to slim you down and fire you up, and in reply someone else suggested if so we should try it.
Before we really thought about it we had all committed to the challenge. At first we said one week without eating meat, but we weren't sure if one week or even two would be long enough, so quickly the idea grew to a month without eating meat. If there was anything to the vegetarian diet, we all agreed that surely that would be enough time to feel the results.
Every time we mentioned our idea, people would say "Hey, thats a neat idea, I want to do that too!" Maybe they were curious if they would get more energy, or loose weight, or they just liked the idea of the challenge, but after 20 were onboard, we realized that there might be broader interest in the idea.
From that it was a simple decision to start a website to to share the idea at large. After sitting down for a little brainstorming, a month without eating meat became MeatlessMarch.com. We initially just focused on March every year for going meatless, but realized that while Meathless March may be a catchy name, going meatless for any month will benefit people, so now use Meatless March as the kickoff and when it's not March there is Meatless month with continuing ideas feedback and content.
