How is Tofu made?
Nearly everyone has heard of tofu, but very few people know what actually goes into the process of making the versatile and healthy food. It is a simple process similar to the way that one would make cheese from milk. While it is entirely possible to make tofu at home, most people opt to buy the tofu at the supermarket.
The process begins with soybeans, which are soaked and pureed. They are then cooked and filtered, which results in soymilk. The soymilk then combines with an added coagulant that will curdle it. Different types of coagulant will result in the different types of tofu: firm, soft, and silken. The tofu makers then form the resulting curds into blocks and let the liquid, also known as whey, drain. The result is the little squares of tofu that you can find in nearly any grocery store.
Those familiar with tofu know that it will absorb the flavors of whatever you are using it in, many find it fun to try the different types of flavored tofu that are on the market. While making the tofu in a similar fashion, the makers add natural flavors to the process. Some of the popular flavors on the market include barbecue, garlic, and even mango for those with a sweet tooth.
When you buy tofu, keep it in water and change the water on a daily basis. You must also keep in mind that it will only stay good in the refrigerator for a week. Don't buy more than you will be able to use in that time, although freezing the tofu is also an option. It can last in the freezer much longer, up to three months in fact. When you freeze tofu, however, the consistency will change slightly, making it chewier.
The simple process of tofu, without all the additives placed in so many different foods that people consume today, it is easy to see how healthy and natural tofu really is. It is one of the world's perfect foods.
