Find the Tofu thats right Fo' You!

Not all tofu is created equal. The three different main types of tofu (firm, soft, and silken) all have different culinary uses. When preparing a dish, it is good to know what type of tofu you will need well ahead of time. Of course, if you prepare tofu dishes often you are likely to have all three on hand at any given time.

Firm tofu has, as the name implies, a firm consistency. One can use firm tofu in many dishes as a healthier substitute for meat. It grills and fries well, and you can cube it to throw in soups or skewer it along with your favorite veggies to make a kabob. It also makes a great, easy sandwich.

Soft tofu, with a more delicate consistency, is perfect for recipes that require the tofu to be blended. Silken tofu, which has a creamy texture, is also great for these recipes and perfect for adding to homemade fruit smoothies for a bit of added protein.

When heading to the supermarket to find your tofu, you will want to consider several things. Buy tofu only in sealed packages to ensure its safety. Make sure you check the date on the package to ensure that the tofu is still fresh, and when you get it home try to use it within the first three to five days of having it. It doesn't stay well after that. Also, keep the tofu in fresh water and change it daily.

With so many different brands of tofu on the market, including organic tofu, you may wish to try several different varieties to find that one that suits you best. Tofu is a great and healthy food that you will find innumerable uses for in the kitchen, as well as a food for which your body will thank you.
